But according to the Special K Challenge, you could lose up to 6 pounds in 14 days if you eat cereals or other special K products for and lunch, plus a regular dinner. The Special K Challenge promotes snacks and two of its daily meals. But it does not make recommendations on the content or size of the third meal. And if that food is loaded with fat and calories, the calorie savings of the rest of the day could be denied, and you won't lose. The special K diet is designed to be a quick solution, not a long-term program. It includes little education and there are no experts or recommendations to help dieters travel the distance. The only support comes from information about cereal boxes and the Special K website, as well as a group of K Challenge messages in Yahoo with a blog by the athlete Gabrielle Reece. There's nothing special about Special K products. In fact, most are not whole grains, and tend to be low in the fiber and proteins that promote fullness. (Of course, dietitians could choose to make their own challenge, with their favorite high-fiber and high-protein cereal along with nutritious snacks and a healthy meal). If you take the special K Challenge, think of it as a prelude to a plan well, and let those six pounds serve as a motivator to help you move on. The Special K Challenge: What You Can Eat The Special K Challenge is a simple, economical one that uses family food that most people enjoy. Dietians can choose from a large number of special K cereals, bars, improved waters and smoothies. Here is a sample food plan in the special diet K: : A portion of special K cereals with 2/3 cup milk and fruit. Lunch: Repeat breakfast or replace a special K Protein food bar. Lunch Dinner: Eat your normal food. Dinner Snacks: Eat two snacks every day of special K products (bars, cereals, snack bites) or fruits or vegetables. SnacksWhen choosing cereals or bars, check the labels and select those high in protein and fiber for greater satisfaction. Be sure to read the portion size on the label, and use a measuring cup at the beginning to make sure you are receiving the recommended portion. Continue with the special challenge K: How it works The K Special Challenge works in the short term because it cuts calories. When you have a meal that contains 100-250 calories instead of a meal composed of bacon, egg and croissant cheese, or a triple cheeseburger and fries, you will certainly lose weight. Special K products are all low in fat and calories. It's also easy to follow. As a food replacement diet plan, the Special K Challenge removes riddles for all snacks and most meals. The freedom to self-elect a third meal makes the challenge more acceptable to most dietitians. The results of a 2002 study at Purdue University (financed by Kellogg) showed that replacing regular meals with calorie-controlled cereal meals and portions could result in weight loss. The study participants took an average of 1,590 calories a day and cut their fat in half. "The substitution of cereals for higher calories can help people cut calories and fats. ...In the study, we found that these reductions were feasible and resulted in a weight loss of 4.4 pounds over a period of 2 weeks," says the author of the study Rick Mattes, PhD. Be careful: You may be very in the special diet of K, depending on what you are used to eating. It is high in carbohydrates and relatively low in fiber and protein. The Special K Challenge: What Experts Say The special K diet is simple, uses foods that are readily available, and is feasible for most people. But experts don't give a total thumb: It's too low in proteins, fibers, fruits and vegetables. It also lacks a component and the types of sustainable changes that are the basis of plans. There is certainly no harm in following the K special diet plan for a few weeks and using it as a springboard for a more balanced weight loss plan that includes exercise, experts say." Although it can be a too simplistic plan... it's a great way to start focusing on things that need to change to get your diet a step in the right direction," says Mattes. Keep in mind that most dieters lose a bit of weight when starting a weight loss plan. You may lose a little more of the weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week in this plan at first, but you can expect a slower weight loss after the first few weeks. An expert says that special diet K could be a good choice for people who tend to skip meals during the day. "This can be a useful option for anyone who usually skips meals or eats fast food or calorie-charged meals," says Lynn Grieger, RD. This is especially true for those who tend to miss breakfast, says another expert. "One of the best aspects of the challenge [Special K] is to get people to eat breakfast because breakfast has been shown to produce a lot of health and cognitive benefits, including weight control," says Marisa Moore, RD, American Dietetic Association spokesperson. Hunger is likely to be a problem. Grieger warns that the cereal with unborn milk and fruit is a great meal or snack, but unless you choose a high-protein cereal, high-fiber, it may be in an hour or two. "Eating low-fiber foods and proteins causes hunger before and can trigger excess food of the wrong types," Grieger says. Moore suggests that dietitians reduce the boredom of eating so many cereal products by adding a lot to the special diet K." Objective for 4.5 cups of a day, which will reduce their calorie consumption naturally and provide a lot of fight against diseases and phytochemicals," he says. The Special K Challenge: Thought Food If you only need to lower a few pounds or want to launch a long-term weight loss plan, the special K diet is a great place to start. To make it healthier, add regular physical activity, make sure your dinner is healthy, and take a daily multivitamin to fill any nutritional vacuum. You can lose weight at the special K Challenge. You can also help you make some adjustments to a healthier feeding plan, such as starting every day with a healthy breakfast and controlling your portions. Continuing But be aware that this is not a long-term weight loss solution, and if you return to your regular diet, the weight can come back quickly. The Special K diet does not address other lifestyle changes that are the basis of a sustainable weight loss program. And it's the things you do every day that really make the difference with time.
