WMO Label: Pro or Con Silence May 08, 2015 You never know which side of the table you're supposed to sit on? I have a lot of fun – I ask a question, I see answers from both sides and I find myself feeling in agreement... with everyone!, failed at 51% last week. In Colorado Proposition 105 to label GMOs failed at 66%, it is not exactly an overwhelming majority for or against labeling. Even within agriculture, there are arguments on both sides of the GMO labelling debate. If as an industry we can't agree on what information is needed on a label, how can we expect a consumer not to get confused? Related: I went to social networks to get answers. In a short time I had many answers, many good arguments for and against the GMO labeling. "I am labeled pro – voluntary labeling, as it is done for gluten-free products because a mandatory label indicates a safety or nutrition difference and most GMOs have no difference there. I believe that most of the efforts we have seen have come to a warning label and the FDA has looked at all this in great detail and has not found any necessary warnings." - Janice Person, consumer, lawyer and employee of Monsanto "I am labeled pro – voluntary labeling, as it is done for gluten-free products because a mandatory label indicates a safety or nutrition difference and most GMOs have no difference there. If that happened, it would be a professional so everyone can take their own food choices." - Matthew Boucher, farmer "With, until the right information is out there and understood by the consumer. I just can't pass by labeling a process, especially a well tested and safe one. The products don't wear a label saying it had produced by any other breeding technique, why start now?" - Peggy Greenway, farmer "With. GMOs have the same nutrition and no separate allergies. Marketing tags are just that. Marketing. If you are free of GMO, there will be a marketing label that tells you." "In retrospect, we should have printed a statement "can contain GMOs" as they do with soy, dairy, peanut, etc. It would not have been a big thing and something consumers are used to seeing and not being afraid of today." - Leah Beyer "Food labels are used to help people make nutritional decisions and avoid ingredients that are allergic to. What percentage of food in a grocery store would have to be labeled? Would you have a restaurant that label dishes that include GMO ingredients? And how much would this cost all of us consumers to make this label? I've heard of farm people, and I already knew how "the chilling wheel" felt, but where is the average consumer? Are you more confused than me? How much of the story are you getting, and are the reliable sources? And you know what a GMO is? Share your thoughts below in the comment section.
