Down Syndrome Markers There is no reason to be still concerned, especially if their results were normal in or their combined/integrated detection (which usually includes a pair with a blood test like the ). A soft marker may indicate a greater probability of a chromosomal anomaly, but it is simply not very reliable, especially considered outside the larger image. Some soft markers have a higher association with others. Many are seen in fetuses without genetic abnormalities and resolve before birth. And none is 100% positive in tests; they simply appear statistically more often in babies who have Down syndrome than in those who do not. In fact, these markers are observed in as many as 11 to 17 percent of all healthy babies. Each of them should be interpreted in the context of other projections, structural anomalies and risk factors. Talk to your doctor about the particular markers you collected. Here are common soft markers that appear in:A soft marker that may have appeared in the first trimester NT (which is always done between weeks 10 and 13) is thickening in the nucal neck, where the area at the back of the baby's neck accumulates liquid, which makes it look thicker than usual. This soft marker has a higher correlation with Down syndrome than any other. Because it is also associated with fetal heart defects, your practitioner may have suggested a fetal echocardiogram in about 20 weeks to detect heart defects if your baby's measurements were high. If your practitioner detects a soft marker, he will probably offer the option of , which would have to happen in the next two weeks (the procedure is done between 15 and 20 weeks). The test will be able to tell you with more than 99 percent accuracy if your child has Down syndrome or another chromosomal abnormality. If you want or not to know, however, it depends on you. But keeping tabs on your baby's growth can be a good thing — and knowledge is power. While technology can lead to additional concern for some mothers, for many others, knowing what comes next can do for a much less stressful pregnancy. Meanwhile, here are some ways to get through this difficult time: Talk to a genetic counselor. Make an appointment to sit with your doctor's genetic counselor (if there is no one, ask for a longer sitting with your regular doctor). A genetic counselor can evaluate your chances of having a child with Down syndrome more accurately, taking into account all your prenatal test results, your age and other risk factors, as well as talking to you about amniocentesis. Do what feels good. Definitely talk the problem with your doctor—and family and friends (if you want)—but in the end, make the decision that feels best for you and your partner if you have one. There are no appropriate answers when it comes to prenatal testing. Your best friend can say, "Oh, I should know!" but you can't feel the same. And that's good. In addition, having two soft markers for Down syndrome is not close to a diagnosis, and the statistics are probably in their favor. Whatever you decide, try to relax. Give, walk or some other relaxing routine an opportunity to help you barefoot. Worry may affect your and your baby's health, so don't feel guilty about standing up and watching your favorite movie. Try to focus on the things you can do for your baby (especially when everything seems to be out of control), like, taking your prenatal vitamin and fixing on the approved professional.
